What are extractions?

A dental extraction is the process of removing a natural tooth. While many people feel anxious at the thought of having a tooth pulled, today’s technology allows for extractions that are safe and painless.

Most extractions are performed using a simple and straightforward process. A surgical extraction may be necessary if your tooth is impacted or trapped beneath your gum tissue. Wisdom teeth often require surgical extraction.

If you experience dental anxiety or are fearful about dental restoration work, let Dr. Ballas and the team know when you book your visit. There are options that can help you relax during your visit and reduce symptoms of anxiety.

When are extractions necessary?

Many people will eventually need to have one or more teeth extracted. These procedures are among the most common dental treatments and are performed to address a wide range of dental needs.

Some of the reasons you might need an extraction include:

  • To reduce crowding
  • To remove a decayed tooth that cannot be repaired
  • To remove portions of a broken tooth
  • In preparation for an orthodontic treatment
  • To remove a baby tooth trapped by permanent teeth
  • In preparation for dentures

Some people who are preparing for certain types of medical treatment must have their teeth extracted prior to beginning treatment.

What should I expect when I come in for an extraction?

On the day of your procedure, you’ll receive an injection of numbing medication to ensure you remain comfortable from start to finish. Throughout your treatment, you’ll be awake and alert but will not feel pain as your tooth is extracted.

A special tool called an elevator is used to gently rock your tooth in a back-and-forth motion. This weakens the connections between tooth and bone.

Dental tools called forceps allow Dr. Ballas or Dr. Langford to grasp the tooth and remove it from its socket. In some cases, a tooth needs to be broken into smaller pieces to facilitate removal. Don’t worry–while you may feel a sensation of pressure, there is no pain involved.

Once Dr. Ballas or Dr. Langford removes your tooth, they place a small piece of gauze in the socket to protect it. You’ll receive a full set of care instructions to support your body as it heals. Be sure to follow these guidelines carefully to reduce the risk of complications.
