What is CEREC?

Chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics (CEREC) is a technology that uses computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to design and fabricate ceramic restorations.

The process uses an intraoral camera to gather high-quality digital imaging, creating precise modeling of the exact size, shape, and alignment of your teeth. Those images are sent to a software program that designs ceramic restorations to fit your smile.

CEREC technology can help restore your smile with custom crowns, inlays, or overlays.

What is the process for getting same-day crowns?

When you arrive for your visit, you’ll receive numbing medication to keep you comfortable during your treatment. Dr. Ballas begins by removing any areas of decay and reshaping your tooth to make room for the dental crown.

A set of digital impressions or imaging is taken at this point to guide the fabrication of your custom crown. A temporary crown would be secured with traditional crowns, and you would head home to wait for the external dental lab to manufacture your new crown. CEREC technology allows your new crown to be crafted in the office while you wait.

Once your crown is ready, Dr. Ballas checks it for fit and appearance. If everything looks and feels good, the crown is cemented into position, completing the restoration. Your newly-manufactured crown will have the same tiny imperfections and surface shapes as a natural tooth and, once in place, will blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.

What are the benefits of CEREC technology?

Convenience is the primary benefit of CEREC technology. This approach allows dentists to fabricate high-quality restorations while you wait. That means fewer visits to the dental office and more time in your schedule.

This technology also enables highly customized restorations. Older options relied on physical impressions made into molds to learn more about the shape and size of teeth. No one enjoyed biting down into a cold tray filled with a putty-like material or the sensation of having those trays pulled away once the material began to set.

The resulting crowns and other restorations tend to be more comfortable when designed and fabricated through CEREC. You won’t have to return to have adjustments made, and you won’t have to wear an uncomfortable temporary crown or bridge while you wait for the off-site fabrication process to complete.

When you’re ready to learn more about how CEREC technology can improve your dental care, call the office to set up a visit with Dr. Ballas and the Holly Street Dental team. Online booking is also an option and only takes moments.
